COASTAL CAMP

A camp for children ages 9 to 14 to fly kites, sing, play games, swim, craft, and cook meals in the wonder of the ocean, its beaches, and maritime forests of the Delaware Atlantic shore.

We will pitch our base camp where the forest meets the beach in the maritime forest of Cape Henlopen.

We will play games, craft, explore the state park and miles of beach. We will also learn how to fly dual-line stunt kites. Once one can fly a stunt kite, a whole world of flying tricks and games opens up for you. And then there is the challenge of group synchronized flying!

What to Expect

Each morning, shortly after sunrise, the staff gather at our campsite. The children arise to the staff singing them awake, welcoming the day and the weather. They have time to get dressed, brush their teeth, and greet each other before coming together for breakfast. Breakfast is filled with stories from the previous night and anticipation for the day ahead. Towards the end of the meal, we announce the day's activities, including what to wear and what to pack for the adventures ahead—whether it's swimming, kite flying, crafts, exploring the park, group games, visiting the nature center, and more.

Morning is a time to build our camping skills as we prepare meals outdoors and clean up afterward. After breakfast and the announcement of the day's plans, campers have some free time before our morning assembly. Morning assembly begins with children lining up in their groups and entering our assembly space. We start with morning songs, listen to a portion of our ongoing morning story, learn about the camp's unique theme for the year, and end with more songs. These assemblies mark the official opening and closing of each day, maintaining a rhythm that children expect.

After the morning assembly, children embark on endless adventures. Counselors and staff plan activities based on the needs, wants, weather, and overall atmosphere of the camp. Some activities are done as a camp, while others are done in smaller groups. For example, one group might build sandcastles and fly kites at nearby beaches, while another explores fire watch towers in the park or enjoys shade at our basecamp with drawing, painting, or games.

Throughout the day, there are plenty of breaks to cool down, swim, collect shells, or simply relax and enjoy the surroundings.

After the first morning session, campers and staff gather once again at our camp for lunch time which again, is full of all the stories from the morning adventures. After lunch, we head into our quiet/rest time. Afternoons are a quieter time at camp. Often these are the hottest, brightest hours of the day so we remain in the shade of our camp for rest time which is a nice moment for us all to sleep, read, draw, write, or simply lay in the shade. It’s a moment of pause in the day, where children have a chance to be alone, while in sight of the group. We find this time to be so important for us as a camp even though not all campers will want to keep to themselves always.

Following rest time, we enjoy a refreshing snack and dive into the second session of activities for the day. This often includes group activities like heading to the lifeguarded beach, playing games, hiking dunes, doing crafts, or helping with dinner preparation. This is one of our favorite times as the hottest sun is behind us, the breeze picks up and everyone is well-rested and energetic for the second part of our day.

As evening approaches, we return to base camp for dinner preparation, build a fire, and transition into dusk and evening time. Before dinner, we enjoy some free time before coming together for the meal. We eat together, clean up, and slowly move into our evening assembly. Similar to our morning assembly, we light a candle for every day that has passed at camp, we sing many rounds and songs in harmony, and each night we listen as the camp storyteller tells a chapter of a story that carries through until the end of camp. After assembly, we begin our transition to nighttime.

We may sit by the campfire a little longer or go to the file and look the beautiful colors in the sky as the sun descends. We help campers fill their water bottles for the night, change into sleeping clothes, perform tick checks, and be with the group until things settle down, often reading something for bedtime.

As the day winds down, counselors ensure their group settles in, the kitchen closes for the day (except for occasional staff snacks), and staff gather for meetings to discuss highlights, and challenges, and plan for the days ahead. After the meetings, staff do a final walkthrough of the camp, ensuring everything is in order before getting a good night's rest.

The joy, laughter, and shared learning experiences create a sense of community at camp that stays with each child throughout the year.
